Reindeer and Musk Ox Farm
The reindeer farm offers a variety of enjoyable Alaskan activities,
including reindeer tours, a gift shop, horse rides, and nearby hiking
trails. Feed and pet these majestic northern animals, and you may even see
elk, moose, and Blacktail deer. Traveling north out of Anchorage, the
Reindeer Farm is located off the Old Glen Highway at mile 11.5, 7 miles
south of Palmer. At the flashing yellow light, turn onto Bodenburg Rd. and
go 3/4 mile. Old Glenn Highway can be accessed traveling north from
Anchorage and just before crossing the Knik River bridge. From downtown
Palmer, simply follow the road signs clearly posted along the higway. A
nominal admission fee offers a wonderful time for young and old alike.
The Musk Ox Farm, located just outside of Palmer, Alaska
(a scenic 50-minute drive from downtown Anchorage) is home to a unique
domestication project which began in 1954. The Musk Ox Farm is an ideal
place to observe and photograph these animals at close range. On the tour
you'll learn about the history of the musk ox, a prehistoric remnant of
the last great Ice Age, and how it has been domesticated on the farm.
You'll see cows, powerful bulls, and tame yearlings. The Musk Ox Project
promotes the use of qiviut (the fine under-wool of the musk ox) as the
basis of an Arctic native textile industry, which provides an economic
supplement to subsistence communities throughout Alaska.
