Portage Glacier Daylodge
Portage Glacier Lodge is a Day
Lodge located an hour south of Anchorage, nestled in Chugach National
Forest amidst a valley of picturesque glaciers. Portage Valley is 55
miles south on the Seward Highway, one of 19 roads designated by the
Federal Highway Administration as an "All-American Road" providing
dramatic views of glaciers, wildlife, mountains, waterways and the history
of the area.
Historically, Portage Glacier Lodge
has always been a family owned and run business operating under a Special
Lease Permit with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Chugach
National Forest. The original building was built in 1956 as a bar at the
end of a five mile gravel road and served Glacier Ice Margaritas. In 1964
a restaurant and lodging was added. The lodging portion of the facility
was eliminated in 1980. The Williams family purchased Portage Glacier
Lodge in 1984. Since 2000 the restaurant and gift gallery have been
operated by mother and daughter.
