Gold Panning - Most gold panning is free or of a nominal charge.
You can pan for gold along any navigable river and in certain areas, only
where posted.
Indian Valley - Just 20 miles south of Anchorage is the
enclave of Indian and the Indian Valley Mine. It is located right on
the Seward Highway. A free tour is included and there is a small fee
for gold panning. Girdwood - Crow Creek Mine is
located just off the Alyeska Highway in the Village of Girdwood, 36 miles
south of Anchorage, and a great day activity. Your nominal entrance
fee entitles you to unlimited gold panning, the equipment, and a poke with
a bit of the yellow stuff. Take a picnic lunch and make a day of it.
Hope- Site of the first gold strike in Alaska, the Hope
gold mine offers a similar opportunity. Walk down to the creek and
try your luck. Cooper Landing- A more extensive
setup awaits you in Cooper Landing with a gold panning exhibit, panning
platform, and all the stuff necessary to find the illusive metal.
Seward- Anywhere along Resurrection Creek.
Denali- At Kantishna Wilderness Roadhouse as part of the
custom tour package or anywhere along the banks of the Nenana River on
your own. Fairbanks- El Dorado Gold Mine includes
gold panning as part of the tour.
Come prepared and watch out for bears during salmon
